It's a brand new computer with Norton, so throwing it out is out of the question.

Actually Norton is the first piece of garbage I'd throw out of a new pc... my pc anyway.. some just feel safer thinking they are secure, whatever floats your boat.

Best antivirus protection is common sense and experience. You can do without an antivirus if you are careful with what you download/from where and what you run on your machine, you cannot do without a decent firewall anymore though.

Best firewall to me is netlimiter, no connection from anything gets in or out without you knowing about it.

Still I understand you think you gotta keep it, family use or whatever, just know this.. Norton is fking shit and doesn't give a crap about privacy "if you read license agreements you'd know just what I mean", it collects more data about usage habbits than it does helping you with anything that is a real threat, like itself 😀

Norton is a great program for defence, but fking won't let simple things that doesn't do any dmg go through without taking steps
